The Presidency: Strategic dialogue and collaborative initiatives for a clean energy future

The U.S. Department of State hosted the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Strategic Energy Dialogue to strengthen energy collaboration between both nations. The discussions focused on shared goals such as energy security, decarbonisation, and economic growth.

Business leaders and government officials engaged in vital conversations, with particular attention given to Nigerias energy sector. A Business-to-Government roundtable hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce provided a platform for deeper discussions on the margins of the event.

In attendance were the Minister of Petroleum (Gas), regulatory agencies – NUPRC and NMDPRA, as well as NNPC Limited. This partnership is critical for Nigeria’s future energy advancements and broader economic development.

Currently, the US and Nigeria have a range of Strategic Energy Partnership Initiatives, which include:
1. EMGP Program: The U.S. Department of State continues to provide technical assistance to Nigeria to cut methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
2. Power Africa: USAID will invest an additional $75-85 million in technical assistance over the next five years to improve electricity services and accelerate decarbonisation.
3. CLEAN (Clean Energy Alliance of Nigeria): Set to launch in fall 2024, this initiative will unite corporate and public sector leaders to promote clean, reliable, affordable energy while providing regulatory support for clean energy
investments.
4. Net Zero World Program: The U.S. Department of Energy will provide over $1.3 million in clean energy technical support for Nigeria, focusing on methane mitigation, comprehensive energy sector planning, expanding power distribution, power sector support, and developing regional energy markets.
5. USTDA RTM (Reverse Trade Mission): Scheduled for October 2024, this mission will take Nigerian delegates to the U.S. to explore technologies for methane reduction and flare gas utilisation in oil and gas.
6. FIRST Program: The U.S. and Nigeria will collaborate under the FIRST initiative to explore the role of advanced nuclear energy in Nigeria’s clean energy future.
