Diving into Nigeria’s Powering Growth in West Africa’s LPG Market

“West Africa’s energy landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, fueled by strategic investments, regulatory advancements, and infrastructure growth, and Nigeria stands at the forefront of this development, driving regional progress in clean energy adoption and LPG expansion. This is one settled position amongst stakeholders in West Africa’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) industry market.”

LPG as veritable engine for accelerated transformative developments in Nigeria’s energy sector

The LPG industry in Nigeria and the West Africa region has experienced remarkable growth and investment, setting the stage for transformative opportunities

Projected Demand Growth: Based on Argus Media, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) forecasts that domestic LPG demand could reach 8 million tons per year by 2028, a projection which underscores the sector’s significant growth potential, with current LPG consumption recorded at 1,627,000 tons in 2022, according to the WLGA 2023 Statistical Review of Global LPG.

$500 Million in Energy Investments: In 2024, Nigeria’s Federal Government attracted over $500 million in energy sector investments, leveraging fiscal incentives to expand the adoption of LPG, CNG, and LNG.

Petrochemical Plant Deal: In October 2024, Nigeria finalized an agreement to supply gas to the proposed $3.5 billion Brass Fertilizer and Petrochemical Plant in Bayelsa State. Expected to generate $1.5 billion annually in exports, a project which also underscores Nigeria’s growing prominence in the global LPG market.

Increase in LPG Production: In September 2024, Nigeria’s oil regulator issued the first license for a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant. Regarded as a groundbreaking facility, will utilize flared gas from the Niger Delta, significantly reducing gas flaring and increasing LPG output. The facility is also expected to deliver 500,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas for the domestic market, underscoring, arguably, Nigeria’s commitment to clean energy initiatives and optimizing natural resources.
