The Angola Liquefied Natural Gas (ALNG) Project is one of the largest energy projects on the African continent, and the first LNG project in Angola. Located in Soyo and operated by Angola LNG Limited which commercializes associated natural gas produced by Chevron and other crude oil operators.
As the world’s first LNG plant supplied with associated gas, ALNG supports continued offshore oil field development. With a capacity to process 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, the ALNG plant helps Chevron meet the global demand for abundant, cleaner-burning natural gas.
In early 2016, work was completed on plant modifications and capacity and reliability enhancements. Production restarted and LNG cargos resumed in 2016.
Energy supermajor – Chevron says it will be supplying 600 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the Angola LNG (ALNG) facility, to start running by the end of the year. This comes as the Sanha-Lean Gas Connection (SLGC) Project – developed by Chevron’s local subsidiary and set to deliver lean gas to the ALNG onshore plant – prepares for first production by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The announcement was made by Chevron’s Managing Director, Southern Africa Strategic Business Unit Billy Lacobie during an “In Conversation with” session at the Angola Oil&Gas conference in Luanda Wednesday.
“It’s very exciting,” says Lacobie, “as you go forward and look at the immense opportunities when you go into gas.” “When you talk about energy security, (gas) is one of the key enablers.”
According to Lacobie, Chevron’s gas production increase will be driven by the installation and tie-in of the SLGC Project to the existing Sanha Condensate Complex, which he said features pipelines connecting Chevron-operated Blocks 0 and 14 to ALNG.
