By Christie U. Omonigho

Shell Plc has disclosed that it paid $5.34 billion in taxes and other charges to the Nigerian government in 2024, marking the highest payment made to any country where the company operates.

Energy Window International (Media) gathered from a local news source which reported Shell as saying that its payments to Nigeria even grew from the previous year. And this was notwithstanding the fact that the global energy industry leader is already on its way out of Nigeria’s onshore business operations after decades of controversial engagements.

Shell who was reported to have released the figures late last week in a disclosure as required under the United Kingdom law will continue with oil and gas production in the waters off the West Africa coast.

Norway, Oman and Brazil where Shell has large and significant oil and gas exploration and production footprints would now be next on the Company’s payments list after Nigeria – all put together received from Shell approximately $11.7 billion within the period under review. The report published on Thursday covers charges related to extractive activities GREATRIBUNETVNEWS reported.

Energy Window International (Media) has also learnt that in the overall, Shell paid governments around the world about $28.1 billion in taxes and charges relating to its extractive activities in 2024, down nearly 5% from 2023. Shell’s full year adjusted earnings in 2024 were $23.7 billion, a roughly 17% decline from 2023.
