Energy Window International (Media) The World Energy Council has just announced a series of new appointments to its Board, following the official meeting of the Executive Assembly held in the city of Panama, upon take-off of World Energy Week 2025.
EWI Publishers learnt that The Executive Assembly would serve as the formal commencement of H.E. Mr. Adnan Amin as the new Chair of the WEC. Known for his distinguished global leadership in energy and international diplomacy according to WEC, Mr. Amin it’s believed, would bring extensive experience to justify his appointment, taking into cognizance his age-long pioneering roles as the founding Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and as Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
Speaking at the opening of the Executive Assembly, Mr. Amin said: “We are meeting at a critical time when the global energy landscape is undergoing unprecedented transformation. The choices we make now will determine whether we can secure a future of resilience, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The World Energy Council is central to this effort, and it must remain at the heart of inclusive dialogue, practical cooperation, and innovative solutions. I am deeply honoured to assume the role of Chair and will focus on ensuring that the Council is equipped, capable, and empowered to provide the platform the world urgently needs to navigate this decisive decade for energy.”
Mr. Amin succeeds Mike Howard, who served as Chair of the Council from October 2022 to 2025, “leading the organization through a period of evolution and the consequent expansion of its intergenerational global space.
EWI Publishers also gathered that WEC equally confirmed the earlier appointment, following a membership vote of Dr Augustín Delgado Martín as Chair of Europe. Delgado Martin, a Spanish national and Chief Innovation and Sustainability Officer for the Iberdrola Group according to WEC source, holds a M.S. in industrial engineering from the Escuela Superior Industrial of Universidad Pontificia de Comillas in Madrid, and a PhD in industrial engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED).
Patricia Vincent-Collawn, Chair and CEO of PNM Resources (USA), and Chair North America also steps down from the North America World Energy Council position having served a successful three-year term.
Welcoming the new appointments, the Council’s Secretary General and CEO, Dr Angela Wilkinson, said: “In today’s fast changing world, the vital role that energy plays in everyone’s lives has never been clearer. Energy is a gift, the ultimate connector and wherever energy flows civilization follows. The World Energy Council’s truly global, inclusive and intergenerational leadership avoids the polarizing “us” and “them” dynamics that today can stand in the way of energy for people and planet, not forgetting peace and prosperity.”
“I greatly look forward to working with our refreshed board to progress our enduring mission of more and better energy for everyone, everywhere. As we countdown the year to our first World Energy Congress in our second century of energy for impact, themed Inspiring Transformations, Delivering Transitions we will convene all energy interests – increasingly diverse needs and interests – and delivery real progress together.”
The Council’s Executive Assembly marks the official commencement of World Energy Week 2025, in Panama, an international gathering of energy leaders, policymakers, and innovators under the theme “Energizing Connections, Powering a Healthy Planet.”
It is expected to be a continuation of the momentum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2026 when the 27th edition of WEC will convene to give a clearer definition around the theme for Riyadh, “Inspiring Transformations Delivering Transitions” while maintaining its position as a critical platform for shaping the future of global energy through “collaboration across regions, sectors, and generations”.
