US$5B FLNG Project: A Big Game Changer for Nigeria and Africa – Dr Julius Rone

By Ejekwu Chidiebere

Energy Window International (Media) – UTM Offshore CEO, Dr Julius Rone said that Nigeria’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG), a “landmark project” according to industry analysts, has advanced into construction. Dr Julius disclosed this to energy industry stakeholders recently, noting that the development was a major milestone not only for Nigeria’s energy ambitions, but for Africa’s broader gas development agenda.

Located at the Yoho Field, OML 104, approximately 60 kilometres offshore in the Niger Delta, the UTM Offshore FLNG facility is expected to produce 1.5 million tonnes of LNG annually for export, while supplying 300,000 tonnes of LPG yearly to the domestic market. Supported by 2.2 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves and designed for a minimum 20-year operational lifespan, the project represents one of Nigeria’s most significant gas infrastructure investments in recent years, UTM Offshore CEO said.

Adding that beyond its export potential, the project will also aid in strengthening Nigeria’s energy security through reduction in Nigeria’s LPG import dependence, while creating jobs and supporting economic growth.

Backed by $5 billion in financing from Afreximbank and in partnerships with global engineering firms such as JGC Holdings, Technip Energies, and KBR, the development analyst say reflects growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and the value of collaboration in delivering large-scale energy infrastructure.

UTM Offshore Limited is a Nigerian offshore energy, and marine logistic company involved in LNG (FLNG) projects, marine logistics, oil and gas support services, pipeline services, dredging and energy trading.

These and other critical industry conversations are truly shaping discussions at different energy industry convocations worldwide and will also feature at NOG Energy Week’s Technical Seminar this July 2026.

For five years, the Technical Seminar has brought together engineers, operators, policymakers, financiers, and technology providers to explore practical solutions around gas monetisation, offshore development, infrastructure optimisation, project execution, local content, and energy transition strategies. More importantly, it has created a platform where ideas move beyond theory into actionable partnerships and commercially viable projects.

As Africa increasingly positions natural gas as a catalyst for industrialisation, economic diversification, and transition towards energy growth, NOG Energy Week remains central to the conversations shaping the continent’s evolving energy landscape.
